Course summary This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to understand the processes of language learning and development, to develop theoretically motivated language teaching curricula, and to improve their effectiveness as teachers of English as a second or foreign language, or more generally to further their understanding of the way in which language affects and is affected by the social and cultural environment. Career opportunities include teaching English as a second language; research in applied linguistics. TESL/TEFL Specialization units: practicum in TESOL; TESOL curriculum and methodology; second language acquisition; language testing and evaluation; speech and language disorders; language in education; practical translation: Chinese; cultural variations in language learning; English for special purposes; practical translation: French; practical translation: Japanese; introduction to syntax; structure of English; language testing and evaluation; issues of bilingualism and bilingual education; cross-cultural communication; academic writing; introduction to phonology and morphology; translation theory and practice; linguistics in translation; foundations of linguistics; language and meaning; research preparation and research project. The Master of Applied Linguistics shall be awarded with Distinction where students achieve a Grade Point Average of 6.0 or above.

International admissions requirements Students must have Bachelor degree in a related course area or equivalent recognized prior learning ("Related course areas" include Education, English, Languages, Linguistics, Psychology, and Speech Pathology). English language proficiency - TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A score of 550 with a TWE (Test of Written English) of 4.5 in the paper-based test or a score of 213 with a 4.5 Essay Rating in the computer-based test or an internet test overall score of 93 with no sub-test score less than 21 and IELTS (International English Language Testing System): a minimum score of 6.5, with no sub-test score less than 6.0.
