course summary

This programme emphasises technical, strategic and generic skills demanded of planners. Students are instilled with knowledge on principles of planning, creativity in designing and problem solving, analytical and strategic thinking, as well as competency in research and practice. The profession of urban and regional planning concerns with the planning, designing and managing of the built environment. It is interdisciplinary in nature and integrates both the art and science of creating a better quality of life in a sustainable environment. At the local level the profession deals with the planning and designing of neighbourhoods, towns and cities. In contrast, the profession focuses on strategic and structural planning at the regional and national level. The profession seeks to balance between society and environment by managing developments through policies, strategies and plans. The programme is designed to graduate future urban planners with knowledge and skills on aspects of development, the environment, information technology, infrastructure, management as well as institution and laws. The programme aims at graduating competent Urban and Regional Planners able to meet the challenges of the profession. Objectives are to provide students with a range of learning experiences in acquiring relevant theories, methodologies, techniques and skills to develop a capacity for creative thinking and problem solving in urban and regional planning; to inculcate a culture of continual learning and innovation among students for a career in urban and regional planning in a dynamic economic, socio-cultural and environmental situations; to prepare students for diverse career opportunities in urban and regional planning and related fields at the local and global level; to instill awareness and sensitivity among students about the roles of urban and regional planning in achieving sustainable development and to offer quality planning education that fulfils the educational requirements of the Board of Town Planners Malaysia. Employment opportunities for graduates of the programme are widely available in the public and private sectors as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs). In the public sector, the graduates are eligible to be employed as a planner at government agencies such as Jabatan Perancangan Bandar dan Desa, Jabatan Kerajaan Tempatan, Jabatan Perumahan Negara, Jabatan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal Negara, Jabatan Lanskap Negara and local authorities. In the private sector, the graduates are eligible to work in planning consultation firms, property developers, project management firms and construction companies. Other opportunities for the graduates are to be an academician or working with NGOs focusing on the society and the environment.

Entry requirement

Student must have Senior High School equivalent to pre-University examination; or A-Level, Diploma in related field or any other certificate recognised by the senate of the University. They are also required to meet one of the following English proficiency requirements: a minimum score of 550 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a minimum overall band score of 6.0 in the British Council IELTS Test.
