City University London has over 100 years' experience of teaching and research. Founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute and awarded full university status in 1966, City enjoys a reputation for excellence in professional education. More than two thirds of City’s courses are recognised by appropriate professional bodies.
The University is based close to the City of London and plays an active role in the business and professional life of the capital. Its Chancellor is the Lord Mayor of London and degree ceremonies are held at the historic Guildhall.
Academic strengths
One-third of the University’s academic activity is business related, including a world-class business school. Another third is health, including nursing, optometry and food policy. The final third includes IT, mathematics, engineering, law, social sciences and creative and cultural subjects.
City has close contacts with multinational companies and leading London firms. Its graduate employment record continues to be one of the best in the country.
City University’s student body is two thirds undergraduate and one third postgraduate with a high number of mature students. Nearly a third of students come from outside the UK, drawn from 160 countries.
