Established in 1886 as one of the UK's first institutions for the higher education of women, Royal Holloway has since grown into a fully co-educational, multi-faculty institution and has been part of the University of London for over 100 years.
Today, Royal Holloway is well-established as one of the UK's top research-intensive universities and we are known internationally for our high-quality research and teaching. We have an international reputation for excellence and our high academic standards are reflected in leading league tables. The College now has a student population of around 8,000, with students from over 130 countries.
Location
Royal Holloway is a campus university, meaning that teaching, learning, accommodation, and student support facilities are located on one main site.
The beautiful campus, set 19 miles west of London in the town of Egham in Surrey, is idyllic and safe, and provides an attractive environment in which to live and study. The main building on campus is known as the Founder's Building. Modelled on a French Chateau, it was built in the 19th century and is one of the most spectacular university buildings in the world. In addition to the retail and catering facilities on campus, there are many shops and other amenities in the local area. The campus is also very close to Heathrow Airport and is just 40 minutes by train from central London.
The nearby village of Runnymede is one of the most historic sites in England, as it was here in 1215 that King John signed the Magna Carta, thereby creating the first ever system of law.
Academic strengths
Royal Holloway has a high reputation in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Our 19 academic departments, which are based within three faculties, offer a wide range of intellectually challenging and diverse programmes of study. There is a flexible Study Abroad provision for students wishing to spend up to a year at Royal Holloway earning credit towards their degree at home, and Royal Holloway International offers a number of specially designed university-preparation programmes.
