Established in 1451, the University of Glasgow is one of the UK's oldest and most prestigious seats of learning. The University of Glasgow is recognised internationally for its ground-breaking work and has inspired thinkers from eminent scientist Lord Kelvin to the father of economics Adam Smith.

Rankings
Glasgow is ranked among the top 100 of the world's universities, by Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The University of Glasgow has soared 18 places this year to attain 59th position in the latest QS World University Rankings for 2011.

The University of Glasgow is a broad-based, research intensive institution with global reach. The University's annual research contract income totals more than £116m, which places them in the UK's top 10 earners for research. The University greets scholars from more than 100 countries around the world every year.

The University practices a research-led approach to teaching. According to the independent National Student Survey 2009, an impressive 90% of the final year students of the University are satisfied with their courses, which is above the national average of 81%, and 3rd in the Russell Group (behind Oxford and Cambridge)

Campuses
The University of Glasgow has three main campuses:

Gilmorehill campus is located in the west end of Glasgow, three miles from the city centre.  The University's compact main campus combines grand historical buildings with up-to-the-minute facilities. Based in the cosmopolitan west end of Glasgow, it's centred on a neo-gothic building with a spire offering breathtaking views across the city.

Garscube campus is four miles away from the main campus. Here you will find the School of Veterinary Medicine and outdoor sports facilities.

Dumfries Campus is surrounded by 85 acres of parkland and gardens in the south west of Scotland, and home to the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
