This programme provides participants with the practical skills and essential theoretical underpinnings of finance for a successful career in financial institutions and other organisations. The programme, which consists of 20 core and elective modules, focuses on developing analytical skills such as formulating and implementing financial solutions and strategies in an investment and trading environment. It aims to raise the standard of professional knowledge and skills in applied finance, an area of critical training identified by the authorities as well as the finance sector in both China and Singapore. Besides covering the critical components required to meet the high academic standards of a Master of Science degree in Applied Finance at SMU, the curriculum is also designed to meet the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examination requirements for those who wish to pursue their CFA charter designation. Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will receive their Master of Science in Applied Finance degree, which will be fully conferred by SMU. Students of this programme will have to complete one year of preparatory study in China (Xiamen or Shanghai) before going to Singapore. While the programme is targeted primarily at students from mainland China, qualified applicants from other countries who are willing and able to spend one year in China and the other year in Singapore. The programme, which is conducted entirely in English, does not require proficiency in the Chinese language even though it may be useful during the preparatory period of study in China. This programme is ideal for practitioners, in finance or related fields, who wish to pursue their Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter designation; postgraduate students from China and elsewhere; those who are currently working in the finance industry in China and who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in applied finance; those who wish to attain the relevant qualifications in order to obtain an ideal job or enhance their career in the banking and finance industry. The programme is taught by highly qualified and experienced faculty and industry professionals; and the curriculum is tailored to meet both the CFA examination and Master of Science degree requirements. Although the programme provides an international perspective of global financial markets and instruments, it is also customised to take into account the unique characteristics of the regional and Chinese business environment

Entry requirement

Students must have a good university degree and GMAT or GRE general test scores. Two years of work experience is preferred and the programme is opened to candidates who are able to spend one year in China and the second year in Singapore. An acceptable TOEFL score is also required for students whose prior education was not conducted in English.
