Health Service and Population Research Department The Institute of Psychiatry is a School of King’s College London and has an international reputation for the excellence of its research and teaching in psychiatry, psychology, and clinical neurosciences. It is the most cited centre for mental health research outside the US and the second most cited in the world. It is also Europe’s largest single provider of postgraduate education for mental health professionals from all disciplines. The Institute’s Health Service and Population Research Department seeks to put innovatory treatments and services to the test in order to improve people’s mental health and enhance their quality of life. Our researchers are developing ways of tailoring services to suit the circumstances of those who are in need of help, discovering what sort of interventions are most effective and acceptable, establishing how to reduce stigma and discrimination against individuals with mental illness, and identifying ways to increase access to effective mental health care for people living in low resource settings across the globe. Our aim is to conduct high quality mental health service and population research that is relevant to policy and practice both nationally and globally. We use a multidisciplinary approach to answer important mental health questions and disseminate our findings internationally through published research and policy guidelines. We also provide high quality, intellectually rigorous education in health service and epidemiological research methods, to enable current and future generations of researchers and practitioners to increase the effectiveness and accessibility of mental health care.
