Course summary The modules offered throughout the course allow a combination of academic and practical studies, with a substantial number of modules combining the 2; students are encouraged to develop specialist strands in their module selection although it is also possible to study a variety of coherent elements; the course starts with an introductory level designed to give students an overall sense of the development of English literature from Chaucer to the present; the different critical approaches which can be taken; and the evolution of 1 particular genre (tragedy) from Aeschylus to Sarah Kane; it includes the possibility of taking introductory modules in imaginative writing; philosophy; or film and cinema.

Program modules Drama All years: Gender and performance; contemporary drama; and devising performance in which we explore texts and practices from the early twentieth century onwards, through both theoretical study and practical workshops. English Levels 2 and 3: Literature from the Renaissance to the present day; level 2 includes modules on Shakespeare and his contemporaries; romantic literature; and Victorian literature; as well as more narrowly focused modules like: the year of X; students can also take options in writing; drama; or film; level 3 includes modules on Modernism; imperial and postcolonial writing; women's writing; contemporary fiction; and modern science fiction; as well as a dissertation in which students are free to select their own topic; further options in writing; drama; and film are also available; at both levels 2 and 3 special topic modules provide opportunities for closely focused work on specific authors such as Oscar Wilde or Angela Carter or specific areas not covered by the main syllabus such as children's literature.
