Course summary Staff at the Centre have a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds, including: psychology; sociology; epidemiology; education; sport sciences; social policy; nursing; and public health; all staff contribute to the Centre's research activities, one of the Centre's main roles is to carry out policy-relevant health and social research, specifically in the areas of public health, primary care and social welfare; it has had considerable success over the last decade in attracting external income for commissioned research; the Centre's research expertise is extensive, particularly in the following areas: evaluation of public health interventions; survey work; researching the local implementation of policies and services for children, young people and families; sexual health and sexual health service provision; primary care roles and service models; researching marginalised groups; and evaluation methodology; the Centre has an excellent track record of working closely with local primary care trusts, local authorities and other agencies to provide public health research expertise as well as associated training and consultancy; studying for an MPhil or PhD is very much an individual activity, and research topics vary widely, according to personal interests; the University helps the student to nurture their interests and develop skills and insights essential to their future progress; students are assisted by access to modern, well-equipped laboratories and library facilities, and are also supported in developing their research proposals; although research may be conducted within any of the University's academic departments, the University also maintains a number of distinctive specialist research centres to support and enhance the student's study options.
